Political Science

Department Profile

Department of Political Science was established in 1967, with about 80 students studying B.A (Pass). Dr. Saroj Pathak was the first teacher-in charge of the Department. B.A (Honours) in Political Science started in 1973-74 and M.A. (Political Science) in 1987-88. Since then the strength of the students in the subject has gone beyond 500. This perhaps is the most popular course taken by students in the college.

Under an interdisciplinary ethos, the Department of Political Science has remained a very active partner of the prestigious B.A. (Hons.) Journalism as the Political Science faculty has coordinated Journalism Department for a very long time and has also taught some Papers like International Relations and Indian Government and Politics to Journalism students.

This department makes an effort to engage students in understanding the current political world, building an active citizenship and democratic engagement. It provides the students with a perspective to engage with the political, social, economic and cultural issues of the times. As a discipline, Political Science endeavours to understand the ‘political’ in the world we live in from the global context to the most intimate yet equally political and significant personal context. It sees itself as providing a space for young women to engage in critical thinking, activism, advocacy as well as leadership. It equips them to share their views in a space where they could interrogate their own deeply cherished values and understand difference and its implications.
